We need YOU! Become a CUB Steward!
Steward Application Form: https://forms.office.com/r/QHkBcfp09G
Being a CUB steward is a hard job but a rewarding one. There is no monetary compensation, but you will become an advocate for your fellow union members and protect the labor rights we have fought so hard for. Being a steward is being a leader in your worksite and is worth the time and effort to become that leader.
And CUB is here to make sure you are successful as a CUB Steward.
The City Union of Baltimore (CUB) is affiliated with the American Federation of Teachers and AFT-Maryland and the AFL-CIO and its affiliates. All Stewards must be familiar with the CUB Constitution, the Collective Bargaining contract for your unit, as well as the AFT Code of Conduct.
Expectations of a CUB Steward
- Represent all workers in the bargaining unit fairly and without discrimination.
- Act as the primary contact for other co-workers in your worksite for contract enforcement and holding management accountable for the rights of the employees.
- Work to resolve problems before a worker is adversely affected or before the situation escalates to a grievance.
- Listen to employee concerns: investigate, gather information and work with CUB LRS (Labor Relation Specialist) and elected leaders on grievances and other workplace solutions.
- Serve as the provider of accurate information regarding the contract, workplace policies and procedures or know where to go to find the right answers.
- Develop respectful and trusting relationships with the members of your worksite and keep member information confidential.
- Encourage members to get active and take action to support their union.
- Organize new employees to join the union when they start their employment.
- Attend monthly Stewards Council meetings.
CUB Steward Responsibilities
- Outreach to new and existing workers in your area about union membership, taking concerted action, contract, and bargaining information.
- Troubleshooting, problem solving, and recognizing grievances.
- Work together with CUB LRS and leadership to file a grievance, when necessary.
- Notify the LRS of change of address, change in employment status, resignation, or leave of absence.
- Keep union bulletin boards updated.
- Be the eyes and ears for changes in workplace rules or policies.
A CUB Steward is not on their own… ever.
- A CUB Steward will receive a two-day stewards training at the beginning or their tenure as a steward and ongoing training on issues of importance to the union, grievance representation, contract interpretation, etc.
- You will be assigned an LRS who will work closely with you throughout your time as a steward and will be available to assist via telephone, email, or in person.
- CUB will provide you with the necessary information and materials for when you are talking with CUB members on your worksite.
- CUB will provide ongoing training in contract enforcement, grievance representation, public speaking, and other trainings as needed.
- CUB will provide member lists and new employee lists, so the steward can follow up and engage the members and new employees in union activities.
- CUB will also provide information on political activities, candidate endorsement, and any other information to support you in our efforts to build a powerful CUB and a powerful labor movement.
