In observance of the Juneteenth National Independence Day, Baltimore City offices will be closed on Friday, June 18, 2021

Dear City employee,

June 19th marks the day when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 to ensure that all enslaved people be freed. This news came two years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Today, Juneteenth honors the end to slavery in the United States and is considered the longest-running African American holiday.

In observance of the Juneteenth National Independence Day, Baltimore City offices will be closed on Friday, June 18, 2021. We encourage all City employees to use this moment to reflect on the unfathomable journey of Black people in America and explore ways that you can make true emancipation a reality for all marginalized communities.

The City of Baltimore will provide essential city services (please see below) during this day of observance. I would like to acknowledge and celebrate the men and women designated as essential employees who will report for duty.

Thank you for your service.

Essential employees and employees designated as emergency essential for the current event must remain at work as scheduled unless informed otherwise by their agency head, designee or immediate supervisors.
Essential City services include, but are not limited to, police and fire protection, water and wastewater processing and treatment, trash and recycling services, utility maintenance, transportation services (including signal operations and maintenance) Convention Center services (including maintenance and preparation for contracted events), municipal telephone services, animal shelter, accounting, management information services, and departmental and citywide payroll functions.

Employees will not be required to use accumulated vacation, personal leave, or compensatory time, or authorized leave without pay.
