CUB Annual Membership Meeting 2019
The City Union of Baltimore hosted their annual membership meeting on Wednesday, June 12, 2019, to update those in the union of all the ongoing affairs of the local. There was a solid attendance that filled most of the main room in the union hall. One of the strengths of the union is a strength of the city, and that is its brilliant diversity. That diversity was on display during the meeting. The meeting largely consisted of updates and reports.
Best economy ever?
In AFT President Randi Weingarten’s latest column in the New York Times, she writes that, despite President Trump’s claims that we have the “best economy ever,” his policies are harming working and middle-class Americans, many of whom are struggling just to get by. “Our political and economic systems are so weighted toward the wealthy that opportunity will only come through the power of collective action,” she writes, using “the surest vehicles to increase opportunity for ordinary Americans”—public education, labor unions and voting. CUB Statement on the death of employee at wastewater treatment plant
All of us here at the City Union of Baltimore are deeply saddened at the tragic death of Trina Cunningham. Beyond being a CUB member and faithful employee of the City of Baltimore, she was a wife, mother, sister, and daughter. Each of her colleagues spoke highly of her commitment and dedication to the job. It pains us that a person with so much life ahead of them dies so young and tragically.

Swearing-In Ceremony of 51st Mayor
City employees are invited to attend the Swearing-In Ceremony of the 51st Mayor, Bernard C. “Jack” Young scheduled for Thursday, May 9, 2019 at the War Memorial Building, 101 N Gay Street, Baltimore, MD 21202. Doors will open at 12:30PM and the ceremony will begin promptly at 2:00PM. The ceremony should take approximately one (1) hour.
Early childhood support requires adequate staffing
Some of education’s biggest problems come with its littlest students. At a working breakfast for paraprofessionals in prekindergarten, early childhood and Head Start, members swapped strategies for solving problems. Their discussion came during the AFT PSRP conference last week in Las Vegas, where paras from all over the country zeroed in on professional development and adequate classroom coverage.

AFT launches massive national campaign to fund public education
The AFT’s long-time advocacy for public schools has just been turbo-charged, with a sweeping, multi-pronged campaign to fund the future of American public education. Amid the continuing wave of teacher activism shining a spotlight on massive shortfalls in education investment, the Fund Our Future initiative aims to take the teachers’ megaphone into Congress, statehouses and communities nationwide.
